ments suggest that at physiological concentrations, only urate contributes to the artifactually high pre-dialysis values. When a standard serum sample was increased in concentration (in vitro) from 11.6 to 54 mmol/L in urea, from 97 to 1130 mmol/L in creatinine, and from 0.31 to 1.38 mmol/L in urate, values for apparent SFA were unaffected by urea or creatinine changes, but rose 13% in the presence of the additional urate. However, in vivo, there was no direct correlation between the extents of urate and SFA reduction, suggesting that other interfering compounds also contribute to the discrepancy. Among nondialyzable compounds suspected are carbamylated proteins produced by cyanate (5). We conclude that urate and other compounds artifactually increase SFA values in renal-disease patients. During hemodialysis, apparent SFA decreased in 75% of patients tested, sometimes by >20%. Both these facts should be taken into account when the SFA test is used to monitor glycemic control.

متن کاملUse of serum cholesterol/triglyceride ratio to discern for which individuals the Friedewald formula can be used confidently.
The values of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol obtained according to the Friedewald formula (Clin Chem 1972; 18:499-502), or by the De Long transformation (J Am Med Assoc 1986;256:2372-7), were compared with the values obtained when the individual cholesterol/triglyceride ratio of very-low-density lipoprotein was used for estimating the contribution of this lipoprotein to the total cholester...
متن کاملAssociation of Lecithin Cholesterol Acyltransferase rs5923 Polymorphism in Iranian Individuals with Extremely Low High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol: Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study
Background: The serum concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is one of the important heritable risk factors for cardiovascular disease and is a target for therapeutic intervention. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) gene polymorphism rs5923 on LCAT enzyme activity and serum HDL-C concentration. Methods: The study...
متن کاملPlasma lipoproteins in normal and preeclamptic pregnant women
Background: Preeclampsia is one of the most common complications of pregnancy. It is the cause of high morbidity and mortality for mothers and fetuses, especially in developing countries. The etiology of preeclampsia is unknown. One of the hypothesis on pathophysiology of preeclampsia is dyslipidemia. The aim of this study was to determine maternal plasma levels of lipoproteins in patients with...
متن کاملThe role of level and function of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) in Cardiovascular Diseases
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a set of particles with heterogeneous structures that have different functions due to various compounds including surface charge, size, lipid, and protein compounds. Several prospective epidemiological studies have demonstrated that there is a clear inverse relationship between serum HDL concentration and risk of coronary heart disease, despite this relationshi...
